But aside from the obvious terminologies, what do they really mean? How are they different from each other? And why is it even important to know about them?
Let’s open up the discussion!
Fast fashion refers to clothing that is commercially produced in bulk or mass. To keep up with rapidly changing trends, they are usually produced at lightning speed – hence the term. They are usually sold at cheaper prices as companies try to outsell competition and ride trend cycles.
It’s mostly what we buy in commercial clothes shops, malls, and other fashion bazaars. They are usually very trendy and quality is questionable.
To put it simply, slow fashion is the exact opposite of fast fashion. Instead of producing clothes fast, and in bulk, they are created in just limited numbers. They carry a higher price tag than fast fashion items but for a number of good reasons.
They are not seasonal and they are usually produced with higher quality, sustainably sourced materials and sustainable production practices.
Fast fashion uses raw materials that are cheap, unnatural, and mostly synthetic. These include man-made fabrics such as acrylics, polyester, nylon and petroleum-based raw materials that produce microfiber plastics that degrade over repetitive wear and tear, which make them very harmful to the environment.
Slow fashion, on the other hand, uses materials that are natural, organic, recycled, repurposed, and/or biodegradable. These include eco-friendly raw and plant based materials - which leave little to no carbon footprint. You’ll find linen, organic cotton, hemp and Tencel among the most popularly used fabrics by slow fashion brands.
Low wages and poor working conditions are common in fast fashion companies. Why? Because they always prioritize their profits above all else. Developing countries often have favorable labor laws, which is where most companies outsource production. Moreso, since fast fashion is produced in factories, the environment is not really that conducive to workers. Look at new articles revealing this unethical practice and you’ll be shocked which major brands depend on sweatshops.
With slow fashion, ethical production is a priority and workers are given higher wages. Those who work in slow fashion also work in better working environments. Our incredible artisans can tell you about that!
With these key differences considered, it’s safe to say that Slow Fashion is the way to a kinder fashion world…
But why do you really need to make the switch?
92 million tons of clothes-related waste are discarded each year. Low price tags of fast fashion lead way to the “throw away society and culture.”
25% of fast fashion garments remain unsold. Many are either doomed to landfills or burned.
Clothing production produces more emissions than international plane travel and shipping combined
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change projects textile manufacturing emissions to skyrocket to 60% by 2030.
Unfair labor practices are rampant in fast fashion industries, and the workforce is neither well-compensated nor cared for. Slow fashion partners with local entrepreneurs and skilled people, and are able to earn fair wages.
While fast fashion clothing is trendy, it’s not durable. It’s time to invest in fashion pieces that transcend seasons – which slow fashion enthusiasts mostly produce.
Slow fashion supports local industries and artists.
Fast fashion is not environmentally friendly. Get peace of mind in wearing pieces that are less harmful to the environment and know that you are not contributing to its further damage.
You can be fashionable without hurting the environment, all while helping other people along the way.
Slow fashion industries are growing along with the momentum of the sustainability movement. So there’s a lot of budding businesses you can choose and buy your clothing from.
Whatever your style may be, you don’t need to settle with just fast fashion companies anymore. You have more options than ever from slow fashion brands.

Does this sound like you? It’s called decision fatigue. Spending a lot of time and energy every day combing through your closet just to get more confused about what to wear. And although you have piles and piles of clothes, you still feel as if you don't have enough of them to wear.
Did we get the dilemma right to a tee? (Pun intended!)
If this sounds like you, then consider building a capsule wardrobe to solve the problem.
With a capsule wardrobe, not only do you eliminate the burden of choosing from a million possible options, but you can also save a lot of time by eliminating unnecessary wardrobe shopping.
Here, we'll show you how to build a capsule wardrobe – but first, let's talk about what it is.
With the growing sustainability movement, capsule wardrobes have become a buzzword recently.
Minimalist living is also becoming popular, so individuals around the world are adopting capsule wardrobes as a means of getting things in order and following a more simple, sustainable lifestyle.
A capsule wardrobe, in a nutshell, is a simplified version of your wardrobe that features more essential pieces that transcend seasons and trends.
It’s a collection of versatile pieces that you love wearing and plan on keeping long term vs short term fast fashion pieces.
The capsule wardrobe collection consists of items that are more of your style, that can be mixed and matched with the rest of your wardrobe for maximum versatility and variety.
First and foremost, it saves you money. With a versatile wardrobe staple that is stylish and functional, you don't need to buy a lot of clothes.
Secondly, it saves you time. No more decision fatigue. With just a curated collection, you can pick, mix and match, and go on with your day in a breeze. Less stress too!
Lastly, it saves the earth. You can get rid of the fast-fashion black hole and be more intentional with your shopping.
Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way to build a capsule wardrobe!
It’s your style, so ultimately it’s your call. But following these steps will surely help you get started.
Before starting anything, you should have a good sense of your fashion style, routines, and needs. This will dictate how you choose your clothes daily.
Ask yourself what your style is, and analyze your everyday fashion activities. Check your color palettes and your fabrics of preference.
Make an audit of your current wardrobe, pull them all out and pile them in a single space, Marie Kondo style.
This lets you see how many clothes you own and gives you an idea of how many are not essential and actually don’t need anymore. For example, if you haven’t worn it in over a year, it’s probably not essential.
Check the pieces one by one and pick out only those that “spark joy.” You should get rid of the pieces that don't fit you, that you no longer desire, and the clothes you didn’t wear for years.
Remember: You don’t need to throw them away, you can sell them or donate them.
Create a plan for your closet wardrobe. Determine the number of pieces you retain and the types of clothing, fabric, and style that will become your new collection.
According to Caroline Rector of Un-Fancy, the sweet spot is 37 pieces of clothes. But it all depends on you! Just make sure you won’t find yourself again in the rabbit hole of wardrobe choices.
Pro tip: Start with your base wardrobe.
Need help? Take a look at our lookbook here for guidance and inspiration!
Now that you’ve planned them out, it’s time to organize your collection in a way that makes sense for you. Here are a few examples:
Neutral clothing is the most versatile one and never goes out of style. More so, they pair well together. With neutral colors in your wardrobe staple, you can surely make the most of your closet.
Think khaki trench coats, cream sweaters, and black suit pants. You can look well put together and classy without all the stressful closet-rummaging mornings.
Choose clothing pieces that stand the test of time and seasons. These are the clothes you can wear time and time again. Remember fabric quality and construction are important factors to consider - especially if you want your clothes to last.
Avoid clothes that quickly go out of style. Think back to how many times you need to go shopping because of your need to replace worn-out clothes.
Quality pieces go beyond regular wear and tear and save you money in the long run.
No…this doesn’t mean wearing the same boring outfit every day! It means letting your creative self shine by mixing and matching wardrobe pieces. When you carry yourself with confidence and class, people won’t even notice – or care – that you’re wearing the same tank top.
Rewearing clothing pieces also establishes your fashion and eye for style.
Once you’ve started creating and building your capsule wardrobe from scratch, create a wishlist of the missing pieces of your collection and shop intentionally.
Of course, you’re allowed to go shopping, but this time, you have to ask yourself if the clothing pieces you buy are really something you need.
Sustainability should also be included in your intentions when shopping! Since this is a revamp of your wardrobe, consider options that are kinder to the planet and to the people.
Here are our eco-friendly, ethically made, and comfy & pretty pieces to help complete your capsule!
Just because it looks good on someone on Instagram doesn’t mean you have to buy it. We all fall into this trap from time to time, and most of the time to our detriment.
Cut the bandwagon lifestyle by being loyal to your unique style, and not swayed by the ever-changing fast trends.
You look good as you are, with your style and with your unique self! No need to be someone else.
Now that you’ve learned about these 10 steps to create your personal capsule wardrobe, it’s time to get to started!
Let the idea of simple living and saving mother earth inspire you to move and transform your life into a more streamlined, intentional, and fashionable direction.
Less is always more, so they say, and with a purposeful wardrobe cleansing, you’re well on your way to a resourceful, guilt-free, and stylish living.
Get ready to build that capsule!

So before you plan on your next fast fashion hauls, consider switching to a kinder type of fashion and living.
Let’s look at the facts:
In the US alone, around 11 million metric tons of textile waste are sent to landfills – where there is no proper waste segregation or treatment.
Such a huge amount of waste can be traced back to the increasing demand and, thus, the production of clothes, which has been reported to have doubled between 2000 and 2015.
Energy usage, carbon emissions, pollution – all these harmful effects brought by the fashion industry has made it responsible for a staggering 10% of global pollution.
These alarming numbers alone call for swift action and reaction from the consumers – us.
You might not see it now, as an individual, but the collective effort of each person can always turn the tide.
So if you’re ready to start the journey toward a more sustainable lifestyle, this list is the best place to start. Read on!
Like where you are now, it is best to start with an open and informed mind.
Maybe you have heard about the terms “zero-waste,” “low impact,” “sustainable living,” “closing the loop,” etc., and at first, found them strange, too-good-to-be-true solutions, or intimidating.
They require work and dedication, but I assure you, they are worth looking into.
There are many available resources for you. Go online and find websites, blogs, and quick guides to start!
You can join community events and public talks as well, so you can be in the same space as other green-minded people.
Don’t obsess about “perfecting” the beginning of your sustainable journey. What matters is that you start an imperfect journey right now.
Yup, we aren’t going anywhere far for our next step. And this one is actually crucial.
You see, when we say fashion, it almost always connects to consumerism. Consumerism adds to the demand for our resources – which in turn brings us back to the fact at the top: waste. We all buy things, but it’s important to be conscious consumers and be mindful of the things that we buy. Do I really need this? How many times will I wear this? How’s the quality?
Zero-waste fashion sounds like quite a leap, so I like to refer to it as low waste fashion as well - lessening our impact on the earth by making conscious decisions about everything I buy.
This usually starts with: Making use of what you already have in your closet.
Take stock of what’s inside and consider which ones you want to keep, you want to upcycle, you want to donate, and you want to repair.
You don’t have to throw away what you have just to “start over.” But you can definitely start better.
That’s right – in this house, we take pride in our artistic (or basic) sewing skills! And you should, too.
Not only are you saving fabrics from being dumped somewhere and adding to the pollution problem, you are also learning and honing new life skills.
What makes this part even more endearing is that it also allows you to create new pieces from your favorite clothes.
Add new patches here and there. Piece a new color and pattern at the hem. Add embroidery even!
Don’t hesitate to get help from seamstresses around town, too, for tricky or more advanced touch-ups needed.
You’ll soon find out that your appreciation for your clothes grows even more with each stitch of love and care that you sew on them.
Here’s one thing that must be cleared up: You’re still allowed to own new clothes and accessories.
Going zero waste doesn’t have to mean that your happiness needs to be put on the back burner. Instead, you can look at your passion for clothes and fashion through a new lens.
Try thrifting and receiving preloved clothes from friends and family!
While this is not absolute zero-waste, this still lessens the chances of perfectly good clothes from being burned or thrown away.
Visit vintage shops, or thrift shops for great deals. Not only are you saving the environment, but you are also saving your bank account from meaningless splurging.
For one-day events that require attires you don’t usually wear, you can ask friends and family if there’s something you can borrow. Style it up and secure the fit, and you’re all set! That’s looking and feeling nice without the fast fashion guilt.
Remember: Low carbon footprint wardrobe is the new #goals today!
Clothes are investments, too. And if you want to have an investment that you won’t regret, then the smartest way to do so is by patronizing products from sustainable shops.
Here are some places to check out for a complete green wardrobe:
Clothes + Accessories:
No need to go far - VALANI has a complete lookbook for you! We have gorgeous garments made from hemp, Tencel and banana fabrics! These materials are comfortable, breathable, and 100% eco-friendly. Check them out here.

Bags:

What you’ll notice is that prices are higher for products coming from these brands. And no, it’s not because of branding.
The reason is that a great part of their business model is making sure that the materials used will be processed properly and safely, whether they are from recovered plastics or raw, organic sources.
They ensure fair and ethical labor practices, where no community or group of artisans are exploited for money, work, and knowledge.
Another positive perk is the warm feeling you get from purchasing from eco-friendly and “closing the loop” brands. You can be certain that every piece that you buy is made with love, care and high quality which will last much longer than fast fashion pieces.
In essence, this is the type of investment that makes you feel & look beautiful while doing some good. So what’s stopping you? Visit these shops now!
With more and more groups and events calling for immediate action for the declining state of the environment, it’s time for us to take action even in our own personal way.
We can start anywhere and anyhow – with our food choices, our purchases, and our wardrobe makeovers.
And what’s great about this, is that embracing sustainability is now made accessible, fun, and simple!
This is a great starting point to reinvent your style and reclaim your power.
Ready for a meaningful journey? Let’s go and say yes to the clean, green, and ethical dress!

We can’t go about our day without checking and checking in our phones and social media accounts. We use our phones to quickly reach someone (especially at the height of this pandemic two years back).
One survey even details how Americans are very much glued to their phones – checking it 344 times per day or a shocking once every 4 minutes. “As many as 71% of us check our phones within 10 minutes of waking up,” it also reveals.
It’s undeniable that our phones are our constant companions.
Essentially, our lives are intricately weaved in on these small blocks of electronic ingenuity – for all the good reasons (we hope).
But did you know that you can also make a better world for yourself and everybody on this interconnected planet with just a few taps on your smartphone?
Yes! You can bring your environmental activism to your space, at your own time using eco-friendly apps right at your fingertips.
We must remember that it is crucial for all of us to take definite steps toward mitigating climate change. To turn the concern, fear, social media likes and shares – the abstract idea of ecological collapse – into something more personal, more accessible, and more actionable.
And what else can make this good fight fun, quick, and always done by the day?
That’s right – by adding them to your phone!
Here’s a list of the 5 eco-friendly apps you should install now to help build a more sustainable life. Read on!
Is Google your best friend? Maybe…but allow me to introduce an eco-friendly competitor.
Meet Ecosia, the search engine extension that plants trees with your every search. Ecosia uses ad profits gathered from every search to replenish forests in various areas around the globe.
They also release regular financial reports to be transparent with their users and don’t sell your data to third-party advertisers.
To date, Ecosia has already planted 150 million trees (and counting)!
So why hesitate to use this as an alternative search engine when we’re seeing all good, green things from them, right?
Ecosia is compatible with PC and mobile – both Android and iOS.
There is no “away” for your throw-aways. It would most likely end up stacked and trapped in landfills for many years to come or flow directly into bodies of water. So it’s important that people consider how to lessen their inputs and recycle properly.
This is where the iRecycle app from Earth911 comes in! By entering your current location – home, work, or even on the go – you can be directed to the closest recycling centers anywhere in the country. Their member companies can process more than 350 types of materials.
You can also visit their app to learn how-to guides on recycling, in articles and podcast form. And no stress on accessing their app because of its smooth minimalist interface.

Our daily mobile routine won’t be complete without food for sure. Here’s HappyCow to show you around the block (or city or country) where you can find healthy food choices.
While becoming vegan might be a big jump for many, you can always start with vegetarian-friendly options that will pop up in the app. You’d be happy to know that HappyCow is “vegan-run, from a vegan perspective, and staffed by vegans and vegetarians” plus they stand for equality, love, and peace for all beings.
This global food sustainability collaboration can be accessed via the iOS and Android apps, and the website.
As much as choosing vegan meals is a positive step toward sustainability, people also need to consider the food that is being thrown into dumpsters – even when they are still perfectly good for consumption.
This is what the Too Good To Go app is for: saving food to help the planet and its people. Their service revolves around reducing food waste, by connecting the user with leftover food from cafes, restaurants, and supermarkets.
Too Good To Go is available in various countries, thereby providing discounted meals to millions of people.
And what’s even cooler? They are a Certified B Corporation!

Now that we’ve discussed some of the ways you can incorporate sustainability into the most important parts of your life – food, beauty, fashion, and the internet rabbit hole…
It is important that we bring back this reminder for our green crusade:
Using these apps for your sustainable efforts is fun and all okay… but we shouldn’t forget where the biggest and most impactful responsibility lies in our fight for a more livable planet.
The greatest percentage of the world’s historical greenhouse gas emissions is driven by only a few fossil fuel companies – and we must still call for their accountability.
This is where I ask you to think about this urgent situation deeply.
Maybe there is no one web browser extension that can drastically address climate change…
But one small act can still create little ripples… that can then create a wave when done by the hundreds of millions of people on their phones, online.
So yes, continue to join massive movements in calling for climate action – but also do your own revolution at home, on your phones.
Ready? Get set. Install!

The thing is: everyone knows about the “single biggest health threat facing humanity” – that the climate crisis must be addressed and acted upon with great urgency.
Now, we must also remember that only a handful of investors and fossil fuel companies are actually driving the greatest percentage of the world’s historical greenhouse gas emissions.
It’s not something, we as consumers can drastically change with a few zero waste home projects. That’s why we’re also calling for accountability from these businesses and from the governments that should side with the welfare of their people.
So are we, then, free to go on our daily lives, consuming the same products and patronizing the same businesses, since the direct guilt is out of our hands?
Even when we see the uncomfortable truth?
Not really. There is still something – and something big, meaningful, and effective – we can do to help combat climate change even in our own simple ways!
And, trust me, it’s going to be fun, healthy, and cheap! A winning triple combo if you ask me!
Ready to make your greatest positive impact on the earth? Then continue reading below.
No, it’s not zoning out or simply staring into the vast nothingness (although, that sounds like a super chill way to relax our info-loaded brains once in a while!).
Living intentionally is about the big and small changes in your behavior that will ultimately help you create the outcome that you’re looking for.
Sometimes, it’s working on extending your sleeping hours or sleeping earlier; it’s eating and savoring your every bite rather than chomping on food while watching TV; it’s keeping a journal to celebrate, remember, and learn from each day.
The steps to being intentional in your journey to a more sustainable lifestyle are three-pronged:
One: Have a clear vision of what you truly want to achieve.
Two: Understand your greatest “why” for taking on this vision.
Three: Turn the visualization into workable steps. But don’t worry about the huge leaps; start where you are and with what you have and can do.
Minimalism has been a buzzword for years now and has created an incredible movement that not only encapsulates the fashion style but also a way of living.
And no, minimalism isn’t holding back from buying clothes or books or home decor. Minimalism is a way to have peace and find meaning in your life by removing all those unnecessary and distracting factors – whether they may be toxic people, growth-stunting tasks, or material possessions.
In your new sustainable lifestyle, you can start with decluttering and taking stock of what you have now. This, in turn, will show you how you can revert to better choices in your purchase or usage.
With minimalism, you don’t have to miss what brings you joy – plus, you can also be kinder to the world too! Seriously, minimalism isn’t about having less, it’s about having more clarity in your life about what’s really important.
Now, take this as a fun challenge in leveling up your life skills!
If you aren’t comfortable yet in the kitchen or are scared by the seemingly daunting task of feeding yourself something nutritious and delicious (all without burning down the building), you can start small.
Combine buying in bulk and buying produce that’s in-season with planting a few window-friendly or small garden vegetables.
Try out simpler recipes that only need a quick mix, blend, or whisk. Try out vegetarian or vegan dishes. Incorporate more plant-based dishes. Find recipes that use the same bases for soups or protein, so you can swap anytime you like.
The biggest win here is that you save more by cooking only what you can and like to eat. No wasted food, no wasted plastic containers, no wasted money!
Yes, it is possible to start the cleaner change at home! Wouldn’t you be comfier with a household that has no harsh chemicals, has all-natural solutions, and saves up on money?
Almost everywhere now on social media and on blogs do we see people sharing homemade cleaning mixtures, offering organic and zero waste toiletries, and teaching easy-to-follow green swaps for all-around use. All a click away for you!
Do you really need 10+ different types of chemical cleaners for your home? Naw, not really. It’s just what the big corporations want you to believe. You can start with loofa, vinegar, lemons, baking soda, castile soap, kitchen compost, and many more. There really is no need for investing in appliances or big batches of industrial chemicals to keep your space livable.
Remember: Lasting change starts from the inside (of the house).
First off - what is sustainable clothing?
Sustainable clothing refers to fabrics and clothing materials that come from green, ethical, or eco-friendly sources, which can either be from sustainably grown plants or even from recycled items.
It also puts into consideration the business practices of your clothing stores and brands – whether they are designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in a sustainable way. We talk more about sustainable clothing here!
So… how to incorporate this step into your life?
Easy – go wild with your options! Simply walk around your neighborhood or city and you’ll see organic, vegan, thrift, and sustainable shops pop up everywhere. Go online and you’ll see not only local brands but even options that may be hard to source from your place. The world really is your (sustainable) oyster!
People are slowly waking up to the green revolution and making it more personal by incorporating the change into their daily living – and even into their daily fits!
There are places where you can find the perfect shoes that come from raw, organic materials, vegan leather, and even recycled plastic.
You can then pair these up with accessories, bags, and dresses that are all sustainable.
Look here for our special collection and try out tops and bottoms that are made from banana fabric, flowy hemp, and Tencel material. Comfy, kind to the planet, and pretty? Yes, yes and yes!
P.S. Did you know that choosing these products is actually kinder to the budget in the long run? Yes! Because they are made to last, made to match any season, and made with all the care and love our artisans can pour into them.
Lovely collection for a lovely person, if you ask me!
The meat industry being one of the leading causes of climate change and pollution is a known fact.
So by simply reducing the amount of meat you eat, the industry’s impact on the environment is lessened.
How to go by this? Simple: incorporate more plant-based proteins or choose sustainably-raised meat and poultry.
Give it a more fun twist by joining campaigns such as #MeatlessMondays or trying vegetarian recipes in exchange. Whatever route you choose, reducing your meat consumption is a great way to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Whether these are clothes that no longer fit or products you no longer use, there’s someone out there who can put them to good use.
Not only does donating stuff reduce waste, but it also helps someone in need. A win-win! Not to mention, it feels really good to declutter your home and know that you’re helping others in the process.
So next time you’re doing a bit of spring cleaning, be sure to set aside anything you don’t need and drop it off at your local charity shop. Don’t forget to ask for a tax deduction slip.
There is no hard rule set before you can start dipping your toes into green living. Each and every small effort to keep the environment thriving is equally important and appreciated.
As long as you have the wholehearted intention, coupled with action, to enact positive change, you are already a steward of the earth!
This list is your guide to taking the next incredible steps to a kinder and more (positively) impactful life – one that you can create in a fun way, all without breaking the bank.
So, are you ready to make the switch now? VALANI is ready to rock with you and kickstart your sustainable wardrobe!
A quote from Albert Einstein made me realize that both self-love and Earth care are intrinsically connected.
In what way, you may wonder?
Come to think of it…When you commit to self-love, it has a positive impact on those around us. In addition, when you start taking care of yourself holistically, there is a relevant contribution to the environment as well.
Read along if you want to know more about how you can practice self-love and earth care in several, sustainable ways.
It’s a no-brainer that taking better care of ourselves allows us to take better care of other things. Both self-love and Earth care are important concepts in our world today and they arise from a sense of personal and societal responsibility.
We can actually show up for others in a more caring, intentional, and effective way when we start with ourselves. Yes, this includes the Earth too! You can create an impact on our planet when you integrate environmentally friendly steps into your self-care routine.
You can be a good steward of the earth and its natural resources if you learn to wholeheartedly love yourself. Cultivate a strong connection to the environment and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle in order to truly make a difference in the world!
Self-love is such a buzzword these days, and it takes on different forms for different people.
Stress and anxiety can definately harm our physical health in the long run! It's vital to step away from your regular routine and take a moment for yourself.
Of course, each of us has our own way of loving ourselves. But if you're not sure where to begin with self love, here are a couple of ideas to get you started:
Start eating a well-balanced diet.
When you commit to eating a well-balanced diet, you are supporting both your physical and mental health as well as the health of the planet. A diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables lowers your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer while also lowering your carbon footprint. Choosing local and organic foods also helps farmers who grow their crops in environmentally friendly ways.
Get regular exercise outdoors
Exercising not only improves your health but also lowers your carbon footprint. How? Well, when you walk or bike instead of driving, you automatically reduce your car's emissions.
Exercising outside also helps to reduce our reliance on energy-intensive air conditioning systems, which we frequently use when working out indoors. Finally, regular exercise can help you manage stress in a healthy way, lowering your overall environmental impact by reducing negative emotions like anger and frustration, which can lead to excessive consumption.
Getting a restful night's sleep
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every three adults doesn’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, which can lead to poor concentration, irritability, and even obesity.
A good night's sleep is important not only for our physical and mental health but also for the planet.
How? While we sleep, our bodies repair and restore themselves, resulting in improved health and productivity while conserving the Earth's resources.
Try journaling, meditation, or mindfulness
Self-love is enhanced via journaling, meditation, and mindfulness. Reflecting on your thoughts and feelings in a reflective manner can help you achieve better self-awareness and enhance your capacity to deal with challenges in your life.
Take pleasure in the company of your loved ones
Self-love and happiness can also be fostered by spending time with others you care about. Spending time with loved ones has been found to improve mood and minimize negative emotions such as loneliness, anxiety, and sadness by making you feel more connected.
If you do decide to indulge in some self-love, make sure it's for something that truly makes you happy and feels wonderful.
Simply choose what brings you joy. We’re all unique individuals, so figure out what works best for you!
Mother Earth has had a rough time of things lately: her oceans are awash in single-use plastics, wildlife populations are plummeting at an unprecedented rate, and we have less than ten years to avoid irreversible climate change catastrophe.
That's a lot to take in right now, I understand. But that’s reality and it’s happening now!
My devotion to shifting my focus to this greater goal of loving our planet brings me satisfaction because it has a positive domino effect. Some of the worst effects of climate change may still be avoided!
After all, I believe the little things we do each day add up to something bigger for ourselves, our planet, and the next generation.
There are numerous sustainable ways to practice earth care and here are a few easy steps to follow:
Did you know that only about 9% of plastics are actually recycled? Most end up in the landfill or in our oceans. The best way you can help is to reduce the amount of plastic that you consume.
You can also avoid buying items in plastic packaging, bring your own eco-friendly bags, a reusable bottle, etc. For more plastic free swap ideas, check out this blog post.
Recycling is important! You can recycle the basics, like paper, plastic, and glass. If you’re not lucky enough to already have separately colored bins for recycling, look into your local recycling program and find out if there are options that you can sign up for.
Another method is to do composting! Rather than letting all those food scraps, napkins, and extra coffee grounds go to waste, start a compost center at home and use the materials as fertilizer to keep your yard looking lovely!

There have been numerous studies demonstrating the health advantages of spending time in nature. Aside from those, there are also tangible impacts to consider when it comes to climate change and our environment.
For example, spending time outside can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing natural resources like sunlight, rainwater, and wind power. By making a conscious effort to spend time in nature, we can all play a role in reducing our impact on the earth and promoting a more sustainable future.
This is why spending time in nature is an excellent method of practicing self-love and environmental stewardship. You'll not only feel better, but you'll also be contributing to the preservation of our shared home.
We must act immediately and make sustainable living a priority. It is up to each of us to do our part to minimize our carbon footprint. Whether big or small, each of our efforts adds up together to create real change.
We can help ensure that we, our communities, and the earth have a healthy and happy future by practicing the methods above. We are the only ones who can help the Earth heal so let us work together to show everyone how critical it is to protect the environment.
I hope you're inspired to practice self-love while also being environmentally conscious. Since that’s a win-win situation, I challenge you today to LOVE YOURSELF and LOVE YOUR PLANET.

Here are 14 easy ways to get started.
Set aside a specific time each day for yourself. It doesn’t matter when - just do it. Make a schedule of your daily activities and stick to it as much as possible. It will help develop a healthy routine and also help you stay on track.
Take breaks throughout the day - whether it's for five minutes to eat something or fifteen minutes to take a walk outside. Allow yourself some downtime every day. Perhaps you'll want to listen to music that makes you happy or watch videos that make you laugh.
If you're tired of sitting in front of a screen all day, one way to indulge in self care is to engage in alternate exercises. They can be anything from walking on the treadmill at home to going for a run outside. Having a workout schedule will help you stay on track and avoid hitting the gym only when you're feeling motivated, which can lead to better results overall.
There are many different types of exercise that you can enjoy to improve your mood and physical stamina. They can include stretching, Pilates, swimming, hiking, biking, etc. A workout schedule should be tailored to your needs and preferences. Find an activity that you enjoy and will stick with. Scheduling regular exercise into your life can be very good for your mental and physical health.
There's no need to feel guilty about taking breaks throughout the day. In fact, taking regular breaks can help you to live a happier life and recharge your batteries.
Some tips to help you get started:
- Take a 10-minute break every hour
- Break for at least 5 minutes every 2 hours
- Take a 30-minute break once a day
Self care is never complete without regular bonding with friends and family who help you feel connected and supported. Connecting with loved ones not only helps reduce your stress levels, but it can also provide you with valuable perspective and support when you're going through difficult times. So why not make time for your loved ones every week and see how much better your life will be for it?
There are many ways you can choose to create a relaxing environment at home. You can start by picking calming colors and furnishings, and make sure there are plenty of comfortable places to sit or recline.
You can also try using herbs and essential oils to create a relaxing atmosphere, or listen to soothing music. Finally, make sure you use your breaks – whether that’s taking a bath, reading a book, or taking a walk outdoors – to help you relax and de-stress.
A balanced diet is mood enhancing and worth your money! To maintain a healthy lifestyle, include adequate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Consider portion size, caloric content, and sugar/sweetener content when choosing your food. Make sure you drink plenty of water and avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol.
Getting a good night's sleep is a great deal for your physical and mental wellbeing. A lack of sleep can cause anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.
To get the most of it, make sure your bedroom is dark and peaceful before bedtime. This will help you relax and fall asleep faster. Create a regular bedtime routine that includes relaxing activities like reading or meditation. It will help you wind down before bedtime and avoid stressors that can keep you up.
Weekends are a time to be with friends or family, take a walk in the park, or stay in and watch a movie.
You can take a trip to a new place. Go on a road trip, visit an old friend, or explore somewhere new. If you're sporty, you can also get active and have some fun! Perhaps you can spend time with your pets. Petting zoo, playing fetch, and taking them for walks are all great ways to spend time with loved ones.
If your energy is down, you can make time for yourself at the spa. Book an appointment for a relaxing massage or facial treatment.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and can't seem to get your life on track, it may be time to seek professional help. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, professional help can offer guidance and support in areas like:
-Dealing with stress and anxiety
-Overcoming addictions or unhealthy habits
-Improving relationships or finding new ones
-Managing a chronic illness or disability
-Navigating a career change or starting a new one

If you want to feel happier, healthier, and more connected to yourself, it's important to set aside a special DAY for self care.

Get a massage to help relieve your tension and stress and promote relaxation and peace of mind; or take a walk in nature to help you regain balance.
It can be a relaxing way to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By writing in a journal every day, you can gain insight into your thoughts, feelings, and motivations.
This can help you to reconnect with yourself on a deeper level and better understand yourself and live a happier life. Sometimes it just helps to write things out! You may even find that it helps to relieve some stress and anxiety by sorting out your thoughts.
Meditation is a form of self care that has been practiced for centuries. It can help you focus and relax, which can improve your overall mental and emotional health. It's been shown to reduce stress levels and promote peace of mind. There are also several meditation techniques that can be used to focus on your thoughts and feelings, which can help you to relax and de-stress. 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference in your mental health.
Breathwork is an ancient practice that has been used to calm the spirit and recharge the soul for centuries. By breathing in and out slowly and deeply, you can help to clear your mind, relax your body, and boost your energy.
There are several breathwork techniques that can be used to improve your overall health. My favorite is the 4-7-8 method - it helps bring about calmness and focus when I need it. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and then slowly exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat at least 3 times.

A great way to find a park with scenic views is to check out your state or local parks website. Oftentimes these websites will have a map of the park with pictures of the different areas, so you can get an idea of what the park looks like before you go.
If you're looking for a more intimate setting, why not take a romantic walk in nature? There's something about getting lost in nature that can be incredibly special.

Try to find a bike route that is quiet and scenic. This will allow for some relaxing vibes to flow. The route could take you through a park or by a river. It's a great way to clear your head and enjoy some peace and quiet. My personal favorite is a winding road that hugs the coastline. The ocean is a great source of relaxation and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore can be therapeutic. The salty air is also refreshing and can help clear your mind.
You can stream everything from the comfort of your home these days - no driving or gas needed - making this an easy, sustainable date. Pop some popcorn, make some drinks, and get comfortable on the couch. This is a great way to spend a quiet night indoors and catch up on some entertainment.

The term "outfit repeating" comes to mind. But outfit repeating is not a bad thing at all. In fact, it's encouraged as it brings out creativity and more thoughtfulness. Wearing outfits only once or twice is not sustainable and bad for the environment. The "throw away culture" is insane and is fueled by the fast fashion industry to sell more cheaply made clothing that's bad for the environment and the people who made it.
Each year, the average American discards approximately 82 pounds of clothing. Globally, an anticipated 92 million tons of textiles waste is generated each year, with the equivalent to a garbage truck's worth of clothes ending up on landfill sites every second. It's time to do things differently.
With a little fine-tuning and accessorizing, you'll be able to incorporate many pieces into fall and then layer them over your winter ensemble. You'll be back in spring and summer before you know it!
Here are some tips on how you can transition your summer dresses and skirts into chic ensembles for fall!
Are you looking for some statement pieces to spruce up your fall wardrobe? Check out our fall dresses and skirts for more options on how you can change up your look this year while being sustainable and still looking fabulous! We love sustainable fashion and doing what we can to lower our carbon footprint. VALANI is an eco friendly clothing brand that creates beautiful, timeless pieces meant to last from season to season with just a few tweaks here and there. Our garments are ethically made in the U.S.A., as well as by our GOTS certified facility in India - all using only plant based fabrics like hemp, Tencel and banana for long-lasting quality without guilt of fast fashion!
]]>What if I told you that your clothes could be made from plants? And not just any plant, but sustainable materials like hemp, Tencel and even banana. That's right, the future of clothing is here! The vegan movement is a social justice movement with environmental implications. It's not just about food anymore!
Vegan fashion refers to any garment that doesn't contain animal products such as wool (sheep), silk (silkworms), down feathers (ducks) and leather.
While some vegan clothing is plant based, not all of it is. Some brands use petroleum-based synthetics like polyester and nylon which aren't good for the planet or our skin. These synthetic fabrics can release volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs into the environment when they're disposed of, or even just washed at home.
Recently, faux fur and faux leather have become quite popular. The synthetic materials are less expensive than their animal-based counterparts, but shoppers should be mindful that there may still be environmental impacts associated with these products as well.
Faux furs often use petroleum or plastic fibers to keep them looking fluffy while real fur is usually made from rabbit pelts that have been sheared to remove excess hair. Faux leathers are generally made from non-biodegradable PVC or PU which means they are likely to end up in landfills when no longer used by consumers.
It's pretty exciting to note that there are plant alternatives to leather now. Have you heard of apple, mushroom or pineapple leather? Pretty cool, right? As technology advances, we'll get more cruelty free options.
Plant-based clothing is made from natural plant fibers like cotton, hemp and Tencel. This does not include synthetic fabrics. Many people think of plant-based clothing as trendy, but it's been around for decades. Think about it - cotton has been around forever and is the most popular plant fiber for clothing.
For those who want to live sustainably without sacrificing style, plant-based clothing is a great option!
More breathable and moisture absorbent than synthetic fibers.
Generally biodegradable if not blended with synthetics
Naturally hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial.
Eco-friendly - Plant fibers usually have less of an environmental impact than synthetic fabrics because they use fewer chemicals during production.
Vegan clothing is made from animal-free materials, but plant based clothing goes one step further. Plant based clothes are not only vegan and environmentally friendly, they’re also better for your health!
Find out why hemp, Tencel and banana fabrics are the new go-to for sustainable fabrics.

Have you heard of plastic free July! I know it may seem a bit daunting to be completely plastic free. This month is more about spreading awareness of the plastic problem at hand and making changes to decrease the use of plastics in our lives.
Don't worry, there are so many online shops that sell low waste items! I like earthhero.com for misc. things.

16. Get a bidet or spray hose - maybe you won't even need tp anymore!
17. Cotton swabs - buy the kind that are plastic free or buy a reusable swab like "last swab" that's supposed to last for a 1000 uses.

This is a long list of which are the EASIEST swaps that I actually use. My advice is to tackle one area at a time - the bathroom was probably the easiest.

Let's start off with what to avoid. It’s recommended to avoid synthetics, but why?
Most synthetics, i.e. polyester or nylon are made of plastic and aren’t breathable at all. Polyester can leave you with sweat patches since it doesn’t absorb moisture, it actually water-repellant. Instead of absorbing moisture, it allows perspiration to build up inside the garments and traps odors and bacteria.
Basically, when you’re sweating, the fabric sticks to your body and can cause skin irritation. Polyester blended with natural fibers is not much better.
What are we actually looking for when considering fabrics for summer? Great moisture absorption, light weight, breathability and comfort.
Plant-based fibers are great for handling summer heat and sweat. These fibers naturally have great moisture absorption and breathability – however some are better than others. Let’s explore the options!
Cotton is infamous for being a super thirsty crop. According to the Textile Exchange, an organic cotton T-Shirt requires 86 gallons of water to produce versus 2,168 gallons for a conventional cotton shirt. Growers of organic cotton rely more on rainwater and utilize less energy.
Cotton is great for the summer as it wicks away moisture and allows air flow through the garment. However, if you’re going to wear cotton, opt for organic cotton that isn’t blended with synthetics. Organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides (that leak into soil and waterways) and is actually stronger than regular cotton.
Tencel is a luxuriously soft fabric made from eucalyptus trees that are sourced from sustainably managed tree farms and natural forests. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly, require little water, no toxic pesticides and grow on land (that’s typically difficult for other crops to grow).
Tencel is an excellent fabric to beat the summer heat. It’s soft and smooth like silk, cool like linen, yet more absorbent than cotton. It’s become quite the popular fabric for sustainable brands – and for good reason!
Hemp is one of the most amazing plants ever – it literally has 1000s of uses. Hemp plays nice with other fabrics to create wonderful textures when blended.
Banana fabric is a luxurious, cruelty free alternative to silk that upcycles agricultural waste. After every banana harvest, the stems are discarded to make way for new growth.
The inner fibers of the stems are soft and smooth and commonly used for apparel vs the coarse outer layers used for home textiles.
What's your favorite fabric for summer? It's time to diversify your closet with some new fabrics that will help you flow through summer in comfort.

Candles are made with lead-free cotton wicks and a plant-based wax blend free from synthetic dyes, parabens, and phthalates. Each candle is carefully hand poured in small batches in the USA and shipped with compostable shipping materials.
We are currently living in the Anthropocene era. It is a period in which human activity has been identified as the dominant influence on climate and the environment. Meaning – what we do affects everything around us.
When we talk about climate change, we talk about global carbon emissions in our atmosphere. There are 1.7 billion tons of carbon emissions from the fashion industry per year – more than the aviation and shipping industries combined. The levels of CO2 exceed what is safe in our climate. The fashion industry has a direct impact on climate change.
Climate change effects are already impacting our world with extreme heat waves, affecting air and water quality, heavy downpours, sea level rising compromising eco systems and agriculture, drought and insect outbreaks, and increased wildfires.
About 10% of global emissions are caused by the fashion industry. If the industry continues on its current trajectory, that share of the carbon budget could jump to 26% by 2050, according to a 2017 report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
These emissions come from the production of raw materials and garment care. About two-thirds of our clothing comes from fossil fuel-derived synthetics, such as polyester, that emit greenhouse gases and also shed microfibers that add plastic pollution in the ocean.
Let’s remember that: POLYESTER IS PLASTIC.
Every year a half a million tons of plastic microfibers are dumped into the ocean (as much as 20% to 35% of all primary source microplastics in the marine environment are from synthetic clothing), the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.
Microfibers cannot be extracted from the water and they can spread throughout the food chain (gross!). Cutting down on washing can help to reduce the carbon footprint of your clothing wardrobe, while also helping to lower water use and the number of microfibers shed in the washing machine.
In North America alone, 10.5 million tons of clothes are sent to a landfill each year where most won’t decay or decompose. Also, unfortunately, it is cheaper for internet retailers and fashion brands to dump or burn returned goods rather than attempting to find another home for them. This means that further greenhouse gas emissions will be released as the clothes rot or burn.
Research has suggested that online shopping can have a lower carbon footprint than travelling to traditional shops to buy products, especially if consumers live far away. But the rise of online shopping has also driven changes in consumer behavior, contributing to a fast fashion culture where consumers buy more than they need, have it delivered to them and then return a large proportion of their purchases after trying them on.
Returning the items can effectively double the emissions from transporting your goods and then you are left with the problem I mentioned above regarding dumping and burning of returned items.
A simpler way to reduce the footprint from online shopping is to only order what you really want and intend to keep (or order what you actually need). According to the World Bank, 40% of clothing purchased in some countries is never used.
According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the average number of times a piece of clothing is worn decreased by 36% between 2000 and 2015. In the same period, clothing production doubled. We have become a nation of overconsumption and fast fashion. Secondhand clothing can give clothes a second life and help slow down this cycle.
This is our challenge in the fashion industry. Many of the changes that need to be made for clothing to be more sustainable need to be implemented by the manufacturers and big companies that control the industry.
But as consumers the changes we can make in our behavior can add up and drive the change in the industry.
From designers to manufacturers to consumers, we can all make a difference. By being more thoughtful as consumers, we can be more aware of what we are buying.
Change starts with you!
What can we as consumers do? Start with these small steps and be an eco-warrior:
Next time you shop, consider brands that use plant based materials in their line, like VALANI. Plant based fabrics are made from plants (obviously!) – like banana fabric made from discarded Banana Tree stems (cruelty free alternative to silk). Or Tencel made from sustainably managed Eucalyptus trees. Plant based fabrics take less time to decompose going back into the soil being gentler on the earth. Kinder to our planet
Nature is our only home, let’s not mess it up.

My wedding was a two day event – it was impossible to fit so many traditions and ceremonies into one day! First day was a Cambodian ceremony (5 hours long) and a Chinese Tea Ceremony (about an hour). Day 2 was a western ceremony + reception.
Traditionally, Asian weddings are huge banquets with 400+ guests. It’s customary for the parents to invite ALL of their friends, regardless if they actually know the bride and groom or the last time they’ve spoken. This is a sign of respect.
I really wanted a smaller, intimate wedding. 80-100 guests would have been ideal for me. This caused quite the drama with negotiations and ultimately cutting down the guest list to 150. The more guests you have, the higher the overall budget, resources and waste at the end of the event.
Even with 150 guests – I wasn’t able to greet everyone the way I wanted. Going from table to table and taking photos with everyone was exhausting and I felt rushed the entire time. So keep that in mind as well! Since the wedding, I’ve probably lost contact with at least half of the guest list. This is probably because many did not know me personally. I prefer much smaller, intimate weddings where the guests actually know you.
Sustainable option:
Less guests, the better (for your wallet, environment and your stress level).
I rented most of my décor, linens and drapery. I stayed away from personalized one-time use signage. We used chalkboards and general signs that could be reused. I wasn’t as creative at the time, but I definitely would’ve liked to include upcycled décor and more natural elements wherever possible. After all, I'm a huge nature gal.
Sustainable option:
Rent as much as possible or buy used. You can also create your own décor by upcycling wine bottles, tin cans, etc.
My friend made the boutonnieres for close friends and family. Unfortunately the tray of boutonnieres was forgotten and only a few were passed out towards the end of the night. No one noticed except for me and my friend who made it. This leads me to believe that these boutonnieres weren’t even necessary. It was nice to have, but we did just fine without it.
The table centerpieces were long stemmed orchids and clear marbles to hold the stems in place - no floral foam. We used colored LED can lights in the vases, but since I avoid one-time use things now, I’d skip those.
At the end of the night, our guests took home the centerpieces, but there were so many floral arrangements.
Sustainable option:
Instead of floral foam use marbles, rocks and moss. You can donate the floral arrangements to charities that repurpose for hospitals. Keep things simple.
I designed my own invitations – each one had about 10 components that needed to be pieced together perfectly. I put so much time assembling each invitation to make sure it gave the desired wow factor. However, the sad reality is that this beautiful invitation ended up in the trash.
To avoid additional card inserts, I created a wedding website for RSVPs, FAQs and summed up our love story. It totally set the tone and fairy tale theme of our wedding. Not only does that save paper and postage but it keeps your guest list organized. You can fit so much info on the wedding website that you just can’t fit in an invitation.
In 2015, digital wedding invitations weren’t that common – or I never received any. Nowadays I think it’s totally acceptable. Most people use email and why not?
Sustainable option:
Use a wedding website (it’s free) and digital invitations. If you need physical invitations – use recycled paper or seed paper.
I skipped the program cards but had separate menu and name place cards for each person. At the end of the night, it goes to waste.
Sustainable option:
Make one large sign (from recycled paper) or use a reusable chalkboard. Use other elements for name cards - like leaves.
The groomsmen rented all of their tuxes, shoes and all of the accessories. My husband bought his tux but he was able to wear it more than once – at our pre-wedding photo shoot and other weddings.
I chose a neutral color for the bridesmaids’ shoes and let them decide on their own. Women are so picky about their shoes and comfort – so the gals appreciated this. They easily found shoes in their closet that would match the occasion.
Here’s where I would do something different – the bridesmaids dresses. I was so caught up in everything being perfect that I wanted the gals to wear the same dress. The dress was made of synthetic fabric. These dresses aren’t made with the best quality or ethics in mind because they are really designed to be worn just once.
Sustainable option:
Choose dresses that are likely to be more than just a one hit wonder. The colors wouldn’t have to be so exact either – it leaves more room for flexibility. Nothing is sustainable about buying dresses worn only once. Your gals will appreciate having a dress that they’ll actually love to wear more than once. I’ve been a bridesmaid a few times and well….my closet is rather full of dresses I’ll never wear again. Anyone else have this problem?
My dress was so beautiful and unique with a sheer caplet – yet it sits in a huge box and takes up valuable closet space. I told myself that I would wear this dress more than once, perhaps at my 10 year anniversary. I did not factor added weight due to future babies, but that’s a problem for another day. I said ‘maybe my future daughters will want the dress.’ You can’t keep a dress for 30 years for a MAYBE. It’s a bit wasteful if it turns out to be a ‘no.’ She may want something that suits her style instead.
We rented all of the elaborate Cambodian wedding outfits. We had about 6 outfit changes and it would be so expensive to purchase. These were definitely once in a lifetime outfits!
Sustainable option:
Renting a dress, buying vintage or pre-owned, or buying a simple white dress that is likely to be worn again.
Need a beautiful dress that you can wear to a wedding, date night, vacation? We’ve got you covered. You'll look so gorgeous in these dresses that you'll want to wear them again.

Purple hues are making a comeback. Violets, lilac and lavenders have always been popular for good reason! It’s a timeless choice for weddings and easy to incorporate into so many things. You don’t need to stick to one specific tone. Play with different hues of purple and don’t be afraid to mix it up with light, medium shades and throw in bolder shades for some contrast.
Purple is an easy color to use for décor, particularly flowers. There are so many purple flowers to choose from! Try to choose flowers that are in season – it’ll be easier to find and better for your wallet.
Flowers: Lavenders, violets, roses, orchids, tulips, etc.
Pairs with: White/crème, grey, blush, blue, sage
If you’re looking for a color theme that screams ‘happy times are here!’ then pink is calling your name. Pink is my favorite color so I’m a bit biased here. I used vibrant fuchsia and pinks for my own wedding and loved it! With 2020 being such an epic year, I think we could all use a bit of bright, cheery and fun colors to celebrate happy beginnings.
Pink is another easy color to incorporate in just about everything. Mixing different hues of pink can add more depth, dimension and personality. Too much pink? Pair pinks with white/crème. Fuchsia and turquoise go well (those were my wedding colors).
Flowers: Roses, orchids, tulips, star lilies, carnations
Pairs with: White/crème, grey, blush, blue
If you’re looking for something different, we’ve got some ideas. Have you seen Hemp dresses for a wedding? No? It’s different but it works! Our dresses have tiny flecks of white and navy blue, so it’s quite easy to pair things with. This dress works really well if you’re going for that farm house chic or rustic vibe. But seriously…these dresses can work anywhere. Lots of greenery and white flowers would look so gorgeous with these dresses.
Flowers: Roses, orchids, tulips, sunflowers, baby’s breath
Pairs with: White/crème, blush, blue, pinks, sage green
Who said only the bride can wear white? White is clean, crisp, chic and easily flatters, so why not? I recommend the ladies wearing the same shade of white or ivory. If not, some whites may appear “dirty” when standing next to each other in photos. Too much white? No worries, feel free to add a pop of color with bouquets, hair décor and shoes.
Flowers: Use ANY color and variety you want as it all matches with white.
Pairs with: ANY color
Fun fact: Traditionally, bridesmaids wore white to confuse evil spirits on who the actual bride is. In actuality, it’s done because it looks amazing!

Here are some ways to lighten the stress on the planet and your wallet.
]]>
Let’s live a little lighter and reduce some stress on you, the planet and your wallet! Here are few ways that you can plan an eco-friendly and sustainable day to remember.
1. Invitations
Let’s go digital. From e-bills to e-books, things are trending paperless now. So why not do the same for wedding invitations, save the date cards, change the date cards, and RSVP cards, etc. Printing and postage for these printed items can add up fast.
If you really need something tangible, opt for invitations made of recycled paper, seeded paper or kraft paper.
2. Wedding Websites
Here’s where you can share your amazing love story, important details and FAQs. Guests can RSVP and let you know of any special requests. You can easily keep track of who has or hasn’t RSVP yet. So convenient and paper free!
Make your website as detailed as possible – this means less insert cards
if you choose to do a physical invitation. i.e. driving directions, accommodations, RSVP cards.
3. One time use cards
Not everyone needs a separate menu or wedding program. Most of the time, these cards are left on the chair at the end of event or carried away by the wind. Try a chalk board that you can repurpose later or include this info on your wedding website.
4. Reusable Signage
Look for pre-made signs. It can be repurposed or sold to someone who may need it. Think “Wedding this way, here comes the bride.” Not everything needs to have your name, if it does; a black chalkboard does the trick. Chalk boards definitely add some charm to the décor as well.
5. Natural Décor – wood arbors, flower garlands, potted plants.
Use leafy vines to tie chair covers, real leaves with handwritten names as place cards! It's cute and biodegradable.
6. Upcycled Décor – Upcycle corks, coffee cans, wine bottles, glass jars or tin cans to create centerpieces, decorations or table number vessels. Be creative with paint, twine, lace, fabric, etc. The possibilities are endless! Perfect for a rustic, natural, farm chic or backyard wedding.
7. Rent wedding décor instead of buying. Plates, tableware, linens, chairs covers and napkins can all be rented. Some florists, caterers, event planners offer this. You might even be able to save a bit if it’s a package deal.
8. Ditch the balloons
Yes it’s a party, but balloons are one time use and end up in the landfill. If it flies away, it ends up littering the streets or in the waterways. If you need to draw attention to something, try putting up reusable signs tied with flowers.
Try using colored tissue paper to make puffs or flowers. It’s biodegradable, inexpensive and recycled tissue paper options are easily available.
9. Dinner by candlelight
Plant-based candles are inexpensive, natural and a beautiful way to brighten up your wedding day. It also cuts back on electricity.
10. Use live, potted plants instead of cut flowers for centerpieces and decorations. At the end of the day, these live plants can be repurposed at home, gifted to guests or charities.
11. Ditch the floral sponge. It’s the green squishy sponge commonly used inside of floral arrangements. You may not see it, but it’s so popular amongst florist because it’s easy to use and hide.
Although it’s green and mossy-like, it’s not a natural product. It’s made of microplastics, toxic chemicals and does not biodegrade. 1 block of foam = 10 plastic shopping bags.
Instead, try using pebbles, sand, gravel, clay, or marbles inside of vases, bottles or jars.
12. Donate your flowers after the event to local charities.
13. Compost leftover flowers and natural decorations instead of sending it to the landfill. Landfills are too overcrowded for things to biodegrade – it lacks oxygen, soil and moisture.
If it does biodegrade, it’s extremely slow. When food scraps and yard waste are sent to the landfill to rot, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide.
14. Gift Registry – choose items that you actually need and can use long term. If you’d rather opt for monetary gifts to cover expenses, that’s ok too – be upfront about it in your wedding website. For some cultures, monetary gifts are expected.
Encourage your guests to skip the wrapping or use eco-friendly wrapping options. i.e. recyclable or reusable wrapping paper, kraft paper or cloths. Twine instead of ribbons.
15. Party Favors – gift things that people will actually use and are low/zero waste. Here are a few ideas:
Packets of flower or vegetables seeds are great. Popularly seen with the phrase “watch love grow.”
Packets of bird seeds or bird seed feeders
Mini potted plants – succulents are easy to take care of.
Tree saplings to plant.
Soaps wrapped with twine.
Edible treats – make sure the packaging is biodegradable or low waste.
16. Hair Accessories - Floral crowns or just a few flowers are so simple yet elegant. Or get that "something borrowed" from friends and family for bridal combs and veil.
17. Shoes - Go with a neutral color. Chances are your bridal party already has a pair in her closet. Never require everyone to wear the same pair. We can't all wear high heels all day long. Comfort is king on such a busy day.
18. Groom & Groomsmen - Rent the tux. How many times would you actually need to wear a tux or that specific colored vest and bowtie? Or buy nice suits that you can wear for other occasions.
19. Bridesmaid's Dresses – Most bridesmaid dresses are worn only ONCE and become ‘closet stuffers.’ Why? It might not actually fit her style or lacks versatility to be repurposed for other events.
So we’d like to help with that! Here are a few reasons why you’ll love our dresses.
20. Bridal gown - Most brides will wear this dress ONCE and keep it for sentimental value. It'll cost a few hundred dollars to dry clean and preserve in a huge box. Outdoor weddings are trending hard this year.
Our Sokha banana dress in white is perfect for rustic, farm-chic, beach, outdoor or backyard weddings. The best part - you'll absolutely wear it again and it's sustainably made! Beautiful, sustainable and affordable. SHOP SOKHA HERE.

So what’s so special about Tencel? Well, Tencel is made from eucalyptus trees that are sourced from sustainably managed tree farms and natural forests. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly, require little water, no toxic pesticides and grow on land (that’s typically difficult for other crops to grow).
Most importantly, Tencel is made in a closed loop process where non-toxic solvents and water are reused at a rate of more than 99%.
Tencel is an excellent fabric to beat the summer heat. It’s soft and smooth like silk, cool like linen, yet more absorbent than cotton. It’s become quite the popular fabric for sustainable brands – and for good reason!
We use quality, plant based and sustainable fabrics to create eco-gorgeous garments that are made to last. We also plant (1) tree for every garment sold.

At VALANI, we believe in making sustainable clothing that you can enjoy for years to come. But of course, that means taking care of them the eco-friendly way! Here are a few tips on how to take care of your clothes and make them last longer.
1. Use eco-friendly detergents. Good for your skin and earth friendly.
2. Wash your clothes less. Believe it or not, you can wear clothes more than once between washes. Some fabrics naturally resist bacteria and block odors such as hemp and Tencel.
3. Use cold water and make sure to do full loads. It saves energy and money! Your clothes will last longer since cold is gentler than hot.
4. Avoid Dry Cleaners. You’ve probably heard that dry cleaning is bad for the environment. About 80% of dry cleaners use perchloroethylene, a chemical considered to be both a health and environmental hazard by the EPA. If you have to use dry cleaners, look for 'green cleaners.'
7. Ironing - use low heat for delicate fabrics. Natural fabrics tend to wrinkle, so be ready to whip out the iron. Yes, we know...it's extra work. Isn't it worth a few extra mins to avoid harsh chemicals used in "anti-wrinkle" treatments?
8. Repair and mend your clothes whenever possible.

With that in mind here are a few ways to create a more organized, sustainable closet.
]]>Did you know that “10% of women say they feel depressed every time they open their closet doors.” (OnePoll survey of 1,000 American women).
Most of us forget what is in our closet, actually, 61% of women stated they would buy new clothes because they couldn’t find it in their closet.
With that in mind here are a few ways to create a more organized, sustainable closet.
Create 3 bins:
Items that didn’t make it into these bins get to go back into the closet. However, organized.
All of that is a lot of work - but so is stressing out about what to wear and finding that favorite outfit! Congratulate yourself for just a second then see if there’s an item that would extend your wardrobe to make it more of a sustainable capsule closet.
Make a gift list! Are you void of color? Did you realize all of your bottoms had to go in one of the bins? A gift list allows you the opportunity to give yourself a thoughtful, sustainable addition to your closet. This allows you to shop with parameters and without going cold turkey. You know exactly what would accentuate the pieces in your current line up.

Fully understanding the purpose and need of our purchases is the first step. We see too often how frivolous spending adds to clutter. It fills our homes with unnecessary items that eventually end up in landfills or storage units.
The Fashion industry is the 2nd largest polluter in the world, right behind oil. Fast fashion, in particular, plays a huge role in this. They create up to 52 micro-seasons, pumping out new trends every week.
These are designed to make consumers feel out of trend and fuel the need to buy more. To keep up with demand of fast trends, the clothes are made quickly and cheaply, without regard to industry workers or the environment.
What happens to unwanted clothing? Some are donated, but 80-90% are either recycled, burned or end up in landfills.
60% of fabrics are derived from synthetics made from fossil fuels, such as polyester, nylon, acrylic. When these fabrics end up in landfills, they don’t decompose.
If we’re more conscious of our buying habits, we can minimize our waste and lower our carbon footprint. Before making a purchase, ask yourself “How will my purchase affect other people and the environment? How was this made? Can I actually use this product long term?”
Having this deep awareness will allow us to be more conscious of our spending and slow the collection of “junk.” As part of conscious consumerism, we encourage the “buy less, buy better mentality.
Our clothing is not heavily focused on fast trends. Instead, we focus on designing beautiful clothes that are timeless and can be worn for years. These are classic styles with an elevated and feminine twist.
Transparency is our priority at Valani. We welcome our consumers to ask questions, learn about our factory partners and materials we use. We partner with charities and donate a portion of profits to support efforts in protecting our planet.
Our garments are made ethically while using eco-friendly fabrics and sustainable practices. This is Lighter Living in action, this is Valani.
