14 Ways to Indulge in Self Care and Live a Happier Life

There’s a lot of talk about self-care these days. And for good reason – it’s essential for our overall happiness and well-being. But what does that actually mean for us on a day-to-day basis? How can we make the most of our time to take care of ourselves?

Here are 14 easy ways to get started.

1.  Make time for yourself every day

Set aside a specific time each day for yourself. It doesn’t matter when - just do it.    Make a schedule of your daily activities and stick to it as much as possible. It will help develop a healthy routine and also help you stay on track.

Take breaks throughout the day - whether it's for five minutes to eat something or fifteen minutes to take a walk outside.  Allow yourself some downtime every day.  Perhaps you'll want to listen to music that makes you happy or watch videos that make you laugh.

2.  Alternate exercises and have a workout schedule

If you're tired of sitting in front of a screen all day, one way to indulge in self care is to engage in alternate exercises. They can be anything from walking on the treadmill at home to going for a run outside. Having a workout schedule will help you stay on track and avoid hitting the gym only when you're feeling motivated, which can lead to better results overall.

There are many different types of exercise that you can enjoy to improve your mood and physical stamina. They can include stretching, Pilates, swimming, hiking, biking, etc. A workout schedule should be tailored to your needs and preferences. Find an activity that you enjoy and will stick with. Scheduling regular exercise into your life can be very good for your mental and physical health.

3.  Take breaks throughout the day

There's no need to feel guilty about taking breaks throughout the day. In fact, taking regular breaks can help you to live a happier life and recharge your batteries.

Some tips to help you get started:

- Take a 10-minute break every hour

- Break for at least 5 minutes every 2 hours

- Take a 30-minute break once a day

4.  Connect with friends and family regularly

Self care is never complete without regular bonding with friends and family who help you feel connected and supported. Connecting with loved ones not only helps reduce your stress levels, but it can also provide you with valuable perspective and support when you're going through difficult times. So why not make time for your loved ones every week and see how much better your life will be for it?

5.  Create a relaxing environment at home

There are many ways you can choose to create a relaxing environment at home. You can start by picking calming colors and furnishings, and make sure there are plenty of comfortable places to sit or recline.

You can also try using herbs and essential oils to create a relaxing atmosphere, or listen to soothing music. Finally, make sure you use your breaks – whether that’s taking a bath, reading a book, or taking a walk outdoors – to help you relax and de-stress.

6.  Maintain a balanced diet

A balanced diet is mood enhancing and worth your money! To maintain a healthy lifestyle, include adequate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Consider portion size, caloric content, and sugar/sweetener content when choosing your food. Make sure you drink plenty of water and avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol.

7.  Guard your sleep time

Getting a good night's sleep is a great deal for your physical and mental wellbeing. A lack of sleep can cause anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.

To get the most of it, make sure your bedroom is dark and peaceful before bedtime. This will help you relax and fall asleep faster. Create a regular bedtime routine that includes relaxing activities like reading or meditation. It will help you wind down before bedtime and avoid stressors that can keep you up.

8.  Have fun activities that you enjoy each weekend

Weekends are a time to be with friends or family, take a walk in the park, or stay in and watch a movie.

You can take a trip to a new place. Go on a road trip, visit an old friend, or explore somewhere new. If you're sporty, you can also get active and have some fun! Perhaps you can spend time with your pets. Petting zoo, playing fetch, and taking them for walks are all great ways to spend time with loved ones.

If your energy is down, you can make time for yourself at the spa. Book an appointment for a relaxing massage or facial treatment.

9.  Get professional help if necessary

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and can't seem to get your life on track, it may be time to seek professional help. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, professional help can offer guidance and support in areas like:

-Dealing with stress and anxiety

-Overcoming addictions or unhealthy habits

-Improving relationships or finding new ones

-Managing a chronic illness or disability

-Navigating a career change or starting a new one

-Developing better self-care habits

10.  Create a monthly pampering routine

If you want to feel happier, healthier, and more connected to yourself, it's important to set aside a special DAY for self care.

Go ahead, soak your tired toes into a  relaxing bath!  Create some soothing aromatherapy by lighting scented candles or adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

Get a massage to help relieve your tension and stress and promote relaxation and peace of mind; or take a walk in nature to help you regain balance.

11.  Journaling is great for the soul

It can be a relaxing way to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.  By writing in a journal every day, you can gain insight into your thoughts, feelings, and motivations.

This can help you to reconnect with yourself on a deeper level and better understand yourself and live a happier life.  Sometimes it just helps to write things out!  You may even find that it helps to relieve some stress and anxiety by sorting out your thoughts.

12.  Meditation is great for your mental health

Meditation is a form of self care that has been practiced for centuries. It can help you focus and relax, which can improve your overall mental and emotional health.  It's been shown to reduce stress levels and promote peace of mind.   There are also several meditation techniques that can be used to focus on your thoughts and feelings, which can help you to relax and de-stress.  10 minutes a day can make a huge difference in your mental health.

13.  Just Breathe - it’s good for you, and it feels good.

Breathwork is an ancient practice that has been used to calm the spirit and recharge the soul for centuries. By breathing in and out slowly and deeply, you can help to clear your mind, relax your body, and boost your energy.

There are several breathwork techniques that can be used to improve your overall health.  My favorite is the 4-7-8 method - it helps bring about calmness and focus when I need it.  Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and then slowly exhale for 8 seconds.   Repeat at least 3 times.

14.  Treat yourself to a bit of retail therapy - sustainably of course

You can enjoy retail therapy responsibly! Shop for clothes that fit well and make you feel beautiful.  Buy absorbent, lightweight, and breathable outfits. Choose items that will make you happy and inspire you. And opt for pieces that will last long and add value to your wardrobe.

Hemp clothing is a good example which is also anti-bacterial, durable and hypoallergenic. These outfits are temperature regulating, making this sustainable clothing comfortable year round - spring, summer, fall and winter fashion.

You can also invest in high-quality accessories that will complete your look. And take time to smell the different fragrances available in the store and decide which one appeals to you the most.
